The mediating effect of Mentalization on the relationship between Parents¡¯ Adult Attachment and Parenting Behavior

Abstract
This study is to examine the mediating effects of the mentalization on the relationship between parental adult attachment and parenting behavior. 251 infant¡¯s parents were included in the study. Study variables were collected by means of survey responses from parents. The collected data were subjected to correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS 22.0 statistical program, and the mediator effect validation procedure proposed by Baron and Kenny(1986) was used to examine the mediating effects. The study revealed the following results: First, A unstable attachment of parents had a positive influence on negative parenting behavior and a negative influence on positive parenting. Second, A unstable attachment of parents had a negative influence on mentalization. Third, parents¡¯ mentalization exerted mediating role in the relationship between parental adult attachment and parenting behavior. Thus, This study confirmed the importance of parents¡¯ adult attachment and mentalization that influence parenting behavior. Furthermore, it established a theoretical basis that intervention for mentalization is necessary for positive parenting behavior.
